Summaries of cases of EAS for psychiatric conditions were made available online by Dutch regional euthanasia review committees.
In 14 cases, the new physician was affiliated with a mobile euthanasia practice End-of-Life Clinic.
In 27 cases (41 percent), the physician performing EAS was a psychiatrist but in the rest of the cases it was usually general practitioners.
Euthanasia has been accepted both legally and morally in various forms in many societies. There is no more profoundly personal decision, nor one which is closer to the heart of personal liberty, than the choice which a terminally ill person makes to end his or her suffering? In a Colorado survey, 60% of physicians stated that they have cared for patients for whom they believe active euthanasia would be justifiable, and 59% expressed a willingness to use lethal drugs in such cases if legal.
In a study of 676 San Francisco physicians, 70% believed that patients with an incurable terminal illness should have the option of active euthanasia, and 45% would carry out such a request, if legal (35% were opposed).
Consultation with other physicians was extensive but in 11 percent (n=7) of cases there was no independent psychiatric input and 24 percent (n=16) of cases involved disagreements among physicians.
Euthanasia review committees found only one case failed to meet the criteria for legal due care among all 110 reported psychiatric EAS cases during 2011 to 2014, the study reports.
Editorial: Physician-Assisted Deaths for Patients with Mental Disorders "Although the data by Kim and colleagues can serve as indicators of problems with the Dutch system, it would be good to keep their data limitations in mind.
Based as they are on reports filed by the physicians most directly involved in these cases, the accuracy of the information reported is unknown.
Nearly 90% of physicians in another study agreed that ?
sometimes it is appropriate to give pain medication to relieve suffering, even if it may hasten a patient? On the other hand there are some who could make an argument against euthanasia.
